On the 7th day of June, 2016, in advent of the Law Week, the Law students who were selected as representatives from each constituency in LAWSA paid a visit to the Abia state House of Assembly, Umuahia. This visit was led by the LAWSAN president (ABSU chapter), Comr. Dickson Obairi. Some of the members of the LAWSAN House of reps. were also present, Clinicians alike were also present.
There was an educational session about the dealings of the legislative arm (law making body) in this case the Abia State House of Assembly. This session was carried out by Mr Kingsley Iheanacho Alozie, the legislative officer of the Abia State House of Assembly. In the course of the session he made worthy of note, that the 6th Abia State House of Assembly is the current session of the
Abia State legislature. Formed after an election on 2 May 2015 and
inaugurated on 11 June 2015, the Representatives of the
Assembly were elected from 24 constituencies with the majority
being members of the People's Democratic Party . The elected
Speaker is Rt Hon. Barr. Martins Azubuike representing Isiala Ngwa North
Constituency.
He also elaborated on the processes involved in the passing of a bill into law, after which he received questions from the students to which he gave eye opening answers. He further made mention that there are rules guiding the conduct and activities in the Abia State House of Assembly. Still in the spirit of discussing the processes involved in law making, Mr Kingsley presented samples of proposed Bills for the students to examine. In addition, he clarified that a sponsor of a bill is one who initiates the idea of a bill and not necessarily one who presents a bill before the House. Amidst everything he said that no member of the House of Assembly is appointed rather they are elected, and due to this democracy is established.
Thereafter, the president gave a vote of thanks appreciating Mr. Kingsley for his time and knowledge shared. And a tour round the H.O.A complex ensued.
